Cauldstane Slap upcoming show

Cauldstane Slap at the One World CaféI’ll be playing with Cauldstane Slap on Friday 13th August at the One World Café at St. John’s at the west end of Princes Street in Edinburgh.

Cauldstane Slap are an Edinburgh band featuring Scots song and Irish and Scots tunes. This is a rare appearance for us in our home town.

See the poster for more details.

During the performance there is an opportunity to sample fine organic and Fair Trade food, making it a feast for hearts, minds, feet and soul.

The band lineup is Gordon Turnbull (flute, whistles, vocals), Cathy Sharp (fiddle), Duncan McInnes (uillean pipes, whistles, vocals), Robert Chalmers (concertina, mandolin) and special guests Andy May (vocals, bodhrán, whistles) and Sean Paul Newman (guitar, vocals). There are plans for another guest too, which promises to make it a night to remember.

The show is part of the Festival of Spirituality and Peace, which is one of the many festivals that run alongside the main Edinburgh Festival and Fringe during August.

Hope to see you there!

Summer projects

Cauldstane Slap | The Portobello DemoBack from holiday and there’s a chance to look at things afresh before everything gets busy again. There are music gigs with Cauldstane Slap, and individual flute tutorials, too. The next big Cauldstane Slap gig is on Friday 13th August during the Festival of Peace and Spirituality, which takes place alongside the main Edinburgh Festival.

I’m also putting together a web site that details my music leader activities and hope to add more content to The Flow.

If I add to that side projects and longer-term goals, the summer begins to look quite short.

What seems to be clear though is that there continues to be interest in flute playing and creative music opportunities, which keeps me motivated and inspired. It’s certainly good to have positive experiences when the dark clouds continue to build on the economic horizon.

More news on these as they arise.

Neil Gaiman, Carnegie Award, Libraries

Neil GaimanI’m a great fan of Neil Gaiman, and am lucky enough to be such a relatively recent convert  that I ration myself on discovering his writing. He also comes across as an open and engaging character who encourages others.

Winning multiple awards recently for The Graveyard Book, here he is on comics and literary success, interviewed on the BBC. Not exactly revealing, but a thumbnail introduction to an inspiring cross-genre author. His acceptance speech includes a warning about the threat of library closures in an attempt to reduce costs in today’s economic climate.

End of the summer term

It’s the end of the summer term here in Scotland and the holidays are about to begin. In a project-based work pattern, that means a number of projects are ending their cycle, but a number are about to begin.

Here’s to recharging batteries and getting those things off the to-do list.
